Your first visit
What to expect, from the knock on the door to the plan you keep.
How long it takes
About an hour. Your therapist calls the day before to say when they will arrive.
What to have ready
A chair with arms, a clear stretch of floor, the shoes you wear at home and a list of your medicines. If pets bother you or them, put them in another room.
Who can be there
Anyone you choose. Family members often sit in, and one who lives far away can join by phone or video.
What happens
Your therapist listens, looks at how you move and walk, tries a few exercises with you and explains what they find in plain words.
What you keep
A written plan in large print: your goals, your exercises and when the next visit will be.
What we may ask your doctor
With your permission, we send your doctor a note. Medicare asks a doctor or another provider to sign off on your plan of care.
Your home stays as it is
You do not need to move furniture or tidy up. Your therapist works with the rooms as they are and tells you what, if anything, would help.
It helps to have
A clear walkway between the chair and the door
Good light in the room we use
Your usual walker or cane within reach
